Martock has a strong community spirit, evidenced by the variety of organisations, groups and businesses that are run or assisted by volunteers. If you feel you can offer your services to any one of these organisations please get in touch with the appropriate contact person to discuss this. In addition to organisations, clubs and schools listed elsewhere on this website the following organisations rely on volunteers.

Please note some volunteer positions will require applicants to undertake DBS checks before their offers of help can be accepted.

Acorns Pre School Committee

Acorns Pre-School in Bower Hinton is currently looking for members of the local community who would be interested in joining its management committee and who have an interest in Early years education for our young children.

The Pre-school is run by this volunteer committee, all dedicated to offering the children who attend the pre-school, the best possible introduction to education and learning, through play. The committee is an essential part of the life of the pre-school, especially at this really important time for Acorns – with the possibility of a change of premises and an Ofsted inspection due shortly.

Members of the Committee regularly change as children both start and finish at the Pre-school and we are looking for members of the local community who could be a valuable addition to our team and provide some much-needed continuity for Acorns as it moves forward.

If you would like to get involved or have further questions, please get in touch with Nikki Dyer (Manager, 07599981932) or Sarah Barnard (Chair, 07742084736), if possible, before the AGM. We would love to hear from you!

Come join us!

Befriending Scheme

One of the aims of the Our Place Martock project is to tackle social isolation within our community. We can do this in a number of ways – by working more closely with housing, health and care services, by offering support to carers, by providing more social activities closer to people’s homes or by improving local transport. But we also want to set up a befriending service through which volunteers offer some of their time to those who feel isolated, both for companionship and also to help them make changes in their lives. This might be through telephone conversations, face to face befriending or work in groups. Volunteers will be trained and supported by a professional coordinator, giving up as much of their time as each is prepared to offer.

If you are interested in getting involved, would like to help or want to find out more, please get in touch.

Somerset Sight

Somerset Sight is a well-established independent charity that offers support to blind and visually impaired people all over the county.

We are currently looking for new volunteers to join our popular Volunteer Visiting Scheme to visit people in the Martock and Yeovil area. Volunteers offer regular companionship and support with daily tasks such as reading mail, paying bills, accessing appointments and also just getting out of the house for a cup of tea together. If you have two or three hours a fortnight to spare, this is a rewarding volunteering role that can be flexible around your daily life. You will receive training and have support in your role and are able to claim back reasonable expenses such as mileage.

Being able to rely on a regular visit has a real impact on a person’s life, so please consider joining our team. Please contact us for more information.
