South Somerset and West Dorset were one of a small number of localities specialising in the production of both sailcloth and twine (notably Coker Canvas and Dawe’s Twine Works). These needed for the many sailing ships ferrying goods across the globe during this period of industrial growth. With the advent of steam propelled ships these vital sources of local employment needed to adapt. Richard will tell us how this happened. He has written a number of books and articles on this subject, including the extra effort that went into making Coker canvas that made it a byword for quality and attracted large orders from the Admiralty.
