Churchill was an early supporter of air power and started taking flying lessons within ten years of the Wright Brothers’ first flight. In February 1939, having been associated with the Air from the very beginning of military aviation, Churchill was invited to become the Honorary Air Commodore of No 615 Squadron which, within 18 months, was to play a crucial role in the Battle of Britain, as Julian will explain.
